The art of Piero Resta illuminates the subconscious human connection to one’s mythological and cosmological sense of being. For more than forty years, the artist has explored our presence within the cosmos, continually seeking to discover new ways of perception, to develop a new sense of awareness. “I’m interested in seeing the birth of a new awakening, in which the sky becomes closer to the earth, re-establishing that the self does not stop at the self, but is limitless.” The artist has said: “It’s an innate desire that we strive to achieve, to remove obstacles in order to touch the sky.”

The son of a renowned WWII ace pilot, Resta was born in Voghera, Italy, in 1940. His first memorable impression of creative process at work occurred when his kindergarten teacher approached a blank chalkboard, and with colored chalks drew a rose, under which the word “Rosa” was inscribed. Resta witnessed alchemy. As a young man Resta pursued studies at the Instituto Leonardo Da Vinci, where he explored the importance of lines and architecture, instilling a discipline in his work as an artist. During the 1960’s Resta departed from the idea of discipline and turned his energies toward personal expansion, exploring new horizons through the expression of theater and art. He traveled to Paris where he found existentialism and participated in the fervor of Montmarte; to London to embrace the freedom and vastness of personal experimentalism; to Spain to absorb the Mediterranean and solar presence of the sky and sea; and to New York to participate in a broad cultural awakening. In New York, Resta quickly became know for his innovative fashion photography, which was featured in numerous International publications. During this period, Resta was a frequent guest at Warhol’s Silver Factory, and he was actively involved in the poetry and art revolution that was emanating from the city.

Resta was next drawn to California where he lived as a hermit studying mysticism, esoteric philosophies, mythologies, cosmologies, and symbolic archetypes. He emerged from his humble dwellings on the cliffs by the sea to re-enter society as the founder and ring-master of an avante-garde circus/theater, evolving a vision of art and ritual as a means for personal and collective healing and transformation. After California, Resta’s voyage continued westward to the Hawaiian Islands where he resides today. From the moment of his arrival on the fragrant, dramatic, lyrical, and lush landscape of the Islands, Resta has experienced some of the most prolific periods of his artistic career, creating entire bodies of work, including “Eros and Aphrodite in the Garden of Dreams,” “Anatomia Cosmologica,” “Mundus Subteranneam,” “Moon Burning,” “Usque Dun Vivam et Ultra,” and more. In Maui, on the back of the volcano’s rugged terrain, Piero has founded a living institute of sculpture, intellectual growth, and cultural development known as the Kaupo Art Sanctuary.

Through his paintings, sculptures, frescoes, fountains, and architectural works, Resta reveals to us a new way of seeing; the artist invites the viewer to join him in the ecstatic journey of discovery, thereby making us aware of what, only moments ago, seemed unreachable. His work illuminates, augmenting infinity, mixing the vast human imagination with clay, pigments, seeds, gold, and light.
